There’s something special about making homemade ice cream in the summertime. I hope it becomes one of those traditions my son remembers years from now; standing around the ice cream maker, sneaking tastes, and eagerly waiting for it to finish churning. While I make a few special ice cream flavors throughout the year, this Dark Chocolate Peppermint Patty Ice Cream has become our family’s absolute favorite. Rich, dark chocolate ice cream with just the right amount of cool peppermint and chunks of peppermint patties is an irresistible combination. Whether you’re looking for a refreshing summer dessert or you’re a chocolate and mint lover, this easy homemade ice cream recipe is guaranteed to become a favorite in your home too.
You Will Need:
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon peppermint extract
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1 pinch Kosher salt
- 8 mini peppermint patties
Instructions:
- Unwrap and finely chop the peppermint patties. Set aside.
- Whisk sugar, cocoa powder and salt together until uniform. (To ensure that the cocoa powder isn’t lumpy before adding liquid.)
- Add the milk, vanilla and peppermint extract and whisk until smooth. Whisk in the cream.
- Refrigerate the mixture for at least 1 hour or overnight.
- Churn in an ice cream maker per the manufacturer instructions.
- In the last few minutes of churning, add the peppermint patty bits.
- Put the ice cream into a container and freeze until hard. (The ice cream will be very soft right out of the machine.)
- Serve with any toppings you like- mint leaves, chocolate shavings, more peppermint patties, sprinkles.
